Unbeaten American Floyd Mayweather says he needs his "A game" to beat Argentina's Marcos Maidana on Saturday. 

Mayweather is 11-1 favourite for the WBC/WBA welterweight title unification bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. 

"Everybody thinks he's just going to be a pushover, but I don't think so," Mayweather, 37, said. 

Mayweather, who has 26 knockouts from 45 bouts across five divisions, is widely regarded as one of the best defensive fighters of all time. 

Maidana, who won his most recent bout in December with a unanimous decision against the heavily-favoured American Adrien Broner to claim the WBA welterweight title, is known for his all-round skill and power. 

Floyd Mayweather represents a contradiction commonplace among fighters throughout the ages. The chaos and confusion in his life outside the ring is replaced by grace and control inside. His character belongs in boxing - and in Las Vegas. 

Figures released this week show a record number of visitors to this city in a single month (3.7million in March) and of all the attractions up and down the Strip, a Mayweather fight tops the rankings. 

His last outing, against Mexican Saul Alvarez, was the highest-grossing fight of all time, generating revenue believed to be in the region of $150m. Mayweather signed for a guarantee of $41.5m and his final take is estimated to be double that sum after pay-per-view sales, gate receipts and other incomes. 

The Alvarez fight was the second in a lucrative six-bout deal signed by Mayweather with a US cable network which could eventually boost his earnings by $250m. 

Marcos Maidana is the latest to attempt to crack what the five-weight world champion is now calling the May-Vinci Code. "You get your biggest purse when you fight me," he boasts.

WBC welterweight world champion Floyd Mayweather Jnr. wary of Argentine opponent Marcos Maidana on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Floyd Mayweather Jnr., boxing's kingpin, was adamant today that he will need to be at his "very best to overcome" aggressive Argentine opponent Marcos Maidana on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

While Maidana is a long underdog, WBC welterweight world champion Mayweather believes the Santa Fe native's brutal victory over Adrien Broner to claim the WBA crown last December shows he cannot be overlooked.

"So May 3 I've got to go out there and take my time, keep my composure and be me. Everybody thinks he's just going to be a pushover, but I don't think so. That's why I'm training hard and I'm pushing myself to the limit every day," said Mayweather.

"Adrien Broner's a good boxer and he roughed Adrien Broner up and he got the victory, so we can't say what this guy, can or he can't do. We cannot overlook the guy," said Mayweather.

"I can't just say he's going to be an easy fight. What I have to do is I've got to make sure that I'm at my best. I think when Maidana's facing me his confidence is built after he beat Adrien Broner because he feels that both of the styles are very similar."

Despite his impressive victory over Broner, Maidana, 30, has already suffered defeat at the hands of Amir Khan, who is chief support on the card.

The former unified light-welterweight world champion takes on Luis Collazo on the same night, but Mayweather has refused to focus solely on attacking Maidana's body, a focal point Khan and others have used to their benefit.

"My focus is this guy. I'm pretty sure he's going to be well rounded and ready for this fight because this is at a total different level".

"Against Amir Khan, the guy could have been doing a lot of sit-ups and making his body in tip-top condition and tip-top shape. Amir Khan could have just caught him with a good shot," said Mayweather.

"My body is in very good condition, but sometimes a guy can hit me with a good shot and I can feel it, but we just don't know how we're going to approach the fight.

"We're going to take our time and go out there and if a guy leaves an opening on his face, we're going to take it, if he leaves an opening on his body we're going to take it, but we can't just say we're going to go in there and everything is going to go to the body. We're going to take our time and pick the guy apart," he said.

"I can see the shots," said Mayweather. "Actually, I can feel when a guy's going to punch. I can feel it. I don't even have to see it; I can feel it. You know, this is just with experience and being around the sport so long. I can just feel a guy when he's going to shoot his shot. A lot of times guys telegraph their shot. Their body language gives away when they're going to shoot because of how they position themselves."

Indeed, Maidana does tend to telegraph his power shots. "When a guy positions himself in a certain way you know what shot he's going to throw, but my thing is whatever a guy's best attribute is, whatever he does best, my goal is to take that away from him and make him resort to doing something else," said Mayweather, regarded as the most technical boxer on the planet. Saturday night, Floyd Mayweather Jr., with his 45-0 career record, will step into the ring as a professional boxer for the 46th time. For fight fans, Mayweather's upcoming bout with Marcos Maidana is an event marked clearly on the calendar.

After all, Mayweather's tactical and defensive brilliance are without compare—at least not without first turning back the clock a decade or three.

"I can feel when a guy’s gonna punch," Mayweather told the press in a conference call last week. "I can feel it. I don’t even have to see it—I can feel it. You know, this is just with experience and being around the sport so long. I can just feel a guy when he’s going to shoot his shot. A lot of times guys telegraph their shot. Their body language gives away when they’re going to shoot because of how they position themselves."

Of course, you know all this because Mayweather's also created a persona and developed a swagger that has succeeded in making an otherwise cautious counter puncher the highest-paid athlete in all of sports. Mayweather earns an estimated $85 million per year, according to Forbes.

Think about that for a moment.

A small, defensive-minded fighter with sub-par punching power has convinced the world he's an attraction that can't be missed. It's got to be one of the most amazing marketing achievements in the history of modern athletics. Mayweather is more than a fighter. He's an icon.

Across the ring, doing his best to look menacing yet relaxed, will be Maidana, an Argentine journeyman politely referred to as a "slugger." It's a nice way of saying there isn't a lot of nuance in his game. He's going to come forward, hope beyond hope for a miracle and collect the biggest check of his career when it's all said and done.

However, billing this fight as must-see TV is a tough sell.

It lacks the spectacle of Mayweather's previous showdown with Canelo Alvarez. That fight had old-school glitz. Alvarez was outmatched, but he at least held his own in delivering pomp, circumstance and fans.

If Saturday is a can't-miss fight, it's because Mayweather is an artist in the true sense of the word. More than that, he's 37 years old and in the third fight of a six-fight deal he signed with Showtime last year.
This could be one of the last times we see him step into the ring.

If that means something to you, this is a fight you should be sure to watch. But if you are looking for suspense, for a contest without the winner all but written in stone before the opening bell, this isn't it. Mayweather is listed as an 11-1 favorite.

Still, it's boxing's biggest star looking to add on to one of the sport's greatest legacies.

On Saturday at 9 p.m. ET/PT, Showtime will premiere the first of four 30-minute episodes of All-Access: Mayweather vs. Maidana in advance of Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s May 3 defense of his RING and WBC welterweight championships against WBA counterpart Marcos Maidana on Showtime Pay-Per-View from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

All-Access: Mayweather vs. Maidana will precede the 9:30 p.m., ET/PT Showtime tripleheader headlined by IBF light heavyweight titleholder Bernard Hopkins against WBA titlist Beibut Shumenov from the D.C. Armory in Washington, D.C.

Narrated by acclaimed character actor Barry Pepper of Saving Private Ryan and The Green Mile, the show will track the events leading up to the 37-year-old Mayweather (45-0, 26 knockouts) facing the hard-hitting Maidana (35-3, 31 KOs).

In addition, All-Access Live, a new 30-minute program featuring a live sit-down interview with Mayweather and Maidana, will debut on Showtime on May 2 at 6:30 p.m., ET/3:30 p.m., PT, immediately following the live weigh-in that will happen at 6 p.m., ET/3 p.m., PT on Showtime.
All-Access reveals insight into the world of Mayweather, fresh off an $80 million payday from his majority decision victory in September over Saul Alvarez, which added Alvarez's RING and WBA 154-pound championships to the WBC junior middleweight belt that he already owned.

Mayweather is shown purchasing yet another Bentley and Ferrari to add to his fleet of luxury vehicles. From palatial hotel suites for his childrens’ spring break to $100 tips at every turn, viewers are afforded unprecedented access in to the life of the highest-paid athlete in the world.

"Is it about the money? Absolutely. Is it about the fame? Absolutely," said Mayweather. "It's everything wrapped in one. I want to be the best. Not just the best fighter, I want to be the best athlete, period."
Meanwhile, Maidana is 5,000 miles away in Santa Fe, Argentina, still basking in the glow of December's unanimous decision victory over previously unbeaten Adrien Broner that earned him his current belt.
Maidana witnesses the birth of his daughter, Emilia, on March 11 to his fiancée at a Santa Fe clinic.

"I’m not intimidated by anything. Not the crowd, not the lights, not my opponent," said Maidana. "I don't really care about fame. I think if the fights were not televised or if we had to fight without an audience, it would be better. I only want to fight."

When it came to the segments on Mayweather, the episode could have easily been called "All Excess."

Best Spoken Line, Floyd Mayweather: "I want to be the best, not just the best fighter, the best athlete ever. When I leave, I will be known as TBE, and that's 'The Best Ever.'"

Best Spoken Line, Mayweather part 2: "I don't know [his] name, but he knows my name," after getting confused while trying to pronounce Maidana's name.

Best Spoken Line, Marcos Maidana: "I don't really care about fame. I think if the fights weren't televised, or if we had to fight without an audiance, it would be better."

Best written line: Nice work by Mark Kriegel on Mayweather. "But after all these years there is one thing he still lacks, that which can't be measured in dollars - a proper antagonist." However, not sure I entirely agree with this. Jose Luis Castillo and Oscar de la Hoya were certainly worthy opponents and so is

Manny Pacquiao.
* The black slate opening over Mayweather's voice was very cool.
* Watching Maidana beat Adrien Broner never gets old.
* One of Mayweather's camp members made a derogatory remark about Maidana, but Mayweather shushed him, saying, "No, no, no my opponent is tough."
* One thing that should never be overlooked by all the bluster is that Mayweather is one of the hardest working fighters in boxing and that sentiment was eloquently stated by narrator Barry Pepper, "talent by itself means nothing."
* Incredible timing for "All Access," being in Argentina the day Maidana's daughter was born. Those segments in which the fighter held and talked about his newborn child were the only times in which he smiled.
* Excellent transition from Maidana and his child to the out-of-focus neon stilletto on the Las Vegas strip.
* The line, "promoters, sponsors, members of the fourth estate, they're all his [Mayweather's] subjects," was a bit over the top.
* The entire opening segment was unfortunate. Mayweather flaunted his jewely, cash and exotic cars. All of which viewers have seen before.  The cameras followed Mayweather to a luxury car dealership at which he purchased a Ferrari and a Bentley. The narration then explained, "Rare is the odometer that exceeds 2,500 miles."

That scene was followed by Mayweather talking about a breakup with his fiancee, Shantel Jackson, who was a regular on these shows. However, in this episode, she was not even mentioned by name, only referred to as a "this former resident," while showing footage inside Mayweather's home.

That was immediately followed by the an excellent line written by Kriegel, "Floyd may be single, but he's never alone." Then we see Mayweather sitting with three women discussing private body parts. This came off as a thinly veiled dig at his former fiancee.  This isn't the first time that Mayweather has used "All Access" to push a personal agenda that had nothing to do with boxing.

The hard-hitting Argentine powerhouse will be representing a country with a deep and storied tradition in the sweet science when he steps into the ring at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in a 12-round welterweight world unification bout live on SHOWTIME PPV®.

For a country known for its passion for soccer, Argentina boasts an impressive boxing history that includes 39 world champions. Today, high profile Argentine boxers are littered across the sport’s landscape including middleweight world champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez, former interim world champion Lucas “The Machine” Matthysse, who is coming off of an amazing win over John Molina last Saturday, former WBC welterweight World Champion Carlos “Tata” Baldomir, three-time light welterweight world champion Juan Martin “Latigo” Coggi and current WBA Interim Featherweight World Champion Jesus Cuellar.

“I know I not only carry the weight of my Argentine people into the ring with me, but also the pride and glory of Hispanics around the world,” said Maidana. ” It would mean everything to me to be able to do something that no one has done in this sport before. I know it will bring great pride to Argentina.”

Mayweather has faced other Argentine fighters during his storied career, defeating Gustavo Cuello in 1998, Carlos Rios in 1999 and Baldomir in 2006, all three by unanimous decision. The question now is whether Maidana is the person who will end this trend.

“Marcos has the power to hurt Mayweather. We saw that in the [Adrien] Broner fight,” said Matthysse. “If he connects with the right shot and has a chance to connect with more shots, he will be able to beat Mayweather.”

“I think Maidana could win this fight by way of knockout, that’s the only way to go against Mayweather,” Baldomir told ESPN in a recent interview. “Maidana has to break Mayweather’s defense and land one of his signature heavy punches.”

“As an Argentine, I must confess that a victory from Maidana will bring Argentina a huge pride, especially because he’s facing Floyd Mayweather, who is the best pound for pound fighter in the world,” said Coggi. “El Chino has a heavy punch, that’s key for his victory over Mayweather. ”

Despite the long line of champions, the history of Argentines facing No. 1-rated pound-for-pound champions is also strewn with disappointments. Four times an Argentine fighter has found himself in that position and has failed to break through. While these losses were to the household names of Jack Dempsey, Marvin Hagler, Pernell Whitaker and Muhammad Ali, Argentine fans are no doubt clamoring for one of their own to capture their own legendary moment.

Maidana is off to a good-start in making Argentine history, after his thrilling upset of Broner last December. He became the second boxer, after Martinez to be awarded with the “Marca Pais” or “Argentine Trademark.” This honor is given by the Argentine Ministry of Tourism as a way of expressing the pride and support that the Argentine nation has for those individuals.

Maidana will take this and his powerful fists into Las Vegas this week with the hopes of rewriting the history of Argentine boxing from one of just-misses to one of triumph and glory.
