Floyd Mayweather Jnr says WBC welterweight title contender Marcos Maidana 'will be no pushover

WBC welterweight world champion Floyd Mayweather Jnr. wary of Argentine opponent Marcos Maidana on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Floyd Mayweather Jnr., boxing's kingpin, was adamant today that he will need to be at his "very best to overcome" aggressive Argentine opponent Marcos Maidana on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
While Maidana is a long underdog, WBC welterweight world champion Mayweather believes the Santa Fe native's brutal victory over Adrien Broner to claim the WBA crown last December shows he cannot be overlooked.
"So May 3 I've got to go out there and take my time, keep my composure and be me. Everybody thinks he's just going to be a pushover, but I don't think so. That's why I'm training hard and I'm pushing myself to the limit every day," said Mayweather.
"Adrien Broner's a good boxer and he roughed Adrien Broner up and he got the victory, so we can't say what this guy, can or he can't do. We cannot overlook the guy," said Mayweather.
"I can't just say he's going to be an easy fight. What I have to do is I've got to make sure that I'm at my best. I think when Maidana's facing me his confidence is built after he beat Adrien Broner because he feels that both of the styles are very similar."

Despite his impressive victory over Broner, Maidana, 30, has already suffered defeat at the hands of Amir Khan, who is chief support on the card.

The former unified light-welterweight world champion takes on Luis Collazo on the same night, but Mayweather has refused to focus solely on attacking Maidana's body, a focal point Khan and others have used to their benefit.

"My focus is this guy. I'm pretty sure he's going to be well rounded and ready for this fight because this is at a total different level".

"Against Amir Khan, the guy could have been doing a lot of sit-ups and making his body in tip-top condition and tip-top shape. Amir Khan could have just caught him with a good shot," said Mayweather.

"My body is in very good condition, but sometimes a guy can hit me with a good shot and I can feel it, but we just don't know how we're going to approach the fight.

"We're going to take our time and go out there and if a guy leaves an opening on his face, we're going to take it, if he leaves an opening on his body we're going to take it, but we can't just say we're going to go in there and everything is going to go to the body. We're going to take our time and pick the guy apart," he said.

"I can see the shots," said Mayweather. "Actually, I can feel when a guy's going to punch. I can feel it. I don't even have to see it; I can feel it. You know, this is just with experience and being around the sport so long. I can just feel a guy when he's going to shoot his shot. A lot of times guys telegraph their shot. Their body language gives away when they're going to shoot because of how they position themselves."

Indeed, Maidana does tend to telegraph his power shots. "When a guy positions himself in a certain way you know what shot he's going to throw, but my thing is whatever a guy's best attribute is, whatever he does best, my goal is to take that away from him and make him resort to doing something else," said Mayweather, regarded as the most technical boxer on the planet. As Mayweather often says: "It's skills that pay the bills."

Floyd Mayweather vs Marcos Maidana live online boxing free tv: Everything You Need to Know

Saturday night, Floyd Mayweather Jr., with his 45-0 career record, will step into the ring as a professional boxer for the 46th time. For fight fans, Mayweather's upcoming bout with Marcos Maidana is an event marked clearly on the calendar.

After all, Mayweather's tactical and defensive brilliance are without compare—at least not without first turning back the clock a decade or three.

"I can feel when a guy’s gonna punch," Mayweather told the press in a conference call last week. "I can feel it. I don’t even have to see it—I can feel it. You know, this is just with experience and being around the sport so long. I can just feel a guy when he’s going to shoot his shot. A lot of times guys telegraph their shot. Their body language gives away when they’re going to shoot because of how they position themselves."

Of course, you know all this because Mayweather's also created a persona and developed a swagger that has succeeded in making an otherwise cautious counter puncher the highest-paid athlete in all of sports. Mayweather earns an estimated $85 million per year, according to Forbes.

Think about that for a moment.

A small, defensive-minded fighter with sub-par punching power has convinced the world he's an attraction that can't be missed. It's got to be one of the most amazing marketing achievements in the history of modern athletics. Mayweather is more than a fighter. He's an icon.

Across the ring, doing his best to look menacing yet relaxed, will be Maidana, an Argentine journeyman politely referred to as a "slugger." It's a nice way of saying there isn't a lot of nuance in his game. He's going to come forward, hope beyond hope for a miracle and collect the biggest check of his career when it's all said and done.

However, billing this fight as must-see TV is a tough sell.

It lacks the spectacle of Mayweather's previous showdown with Canelo Alvarez. That fight had old-school glitz. Alvarez was outmatched, but he at least held his own in delivering pomp, circumstance and fans.

If Saturday is a can't-miss fight, it's because Mayweather is an artist in the true sense of the word. More than that, he's 37 years old and in the third fight of a six-fight deal he signed with Showtime last year.
This could be one of the last times we see him step into the ring.

If that means something to you, this is a fight you should be sure to watch. But if you are looking for suspense, for a contest without the winner all but written in stone before the opening bell, this isn't it. Mayweather is listed as an 11-1 favorite.

Still, it's boxing's biggest star looking to add on to one of the sport's greatest legacies.

What follows is more information about the fighters, the star-packed undercard and some storylines to track leading up to the fight.

WatCH Mayweather vs Maidana Showtime PPV Fight live streaming online sky, fox, cbs, nbc, tv coverage.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is one of the most entertaining men, inside or outside of the boxing ring. But it was the humility of Marcos Maidana that saved this episode of Showtime's "All Access."

When it came to the segments on Mayweather, the episode could have easily been called "All Excess."
Mayweather and Maidana fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 3. The bout will be televised by Showtime pay-per-view. Here's more from Showtime's "All Access" episode 1:

Best Spoken Line, Floyd Mayweather: "I want to be the best, not just the best fighter, the best athlete ever. When I leave, I will be known as TBE, and that's 'The Best Ever.'"

Best Spoken Line, Mayweather part 2: "I don't know [his] name, but he knows my name," after getting confused while trying to pronounce Maidana's name.

Best Spoken Line, Marcos Maidana: "I don't really care about fame. I think if the fights weren't televised, or if we had to fight without an audiance, it would be better."

The scenic view: Shots of Sante Fe, Argentina.

Training Days: Mayweather body shots.

Best supporting cast: Amilia Maidana, one day old and she's on television.

Best written line: Nice work by Mark Kriegel on Mayweather. "But after all these years there is one thing he still lacks, that which can't be measured in dollars - a proper antagonist." However, not sure I entirely agree with this. Jose Luis Castillo and Oscar de la Hoya were certainly worthy opponents and so is

Manny Pacquiao.
* The black slate opening over Mayweather's voice was very cool.
* Watching Maidana beat Adrien Broner never gets old.
* One of Mayweather's camp members made a derogatory remark about Maidana, but Mayweather shushed him, saying, "No, no, no my opponent is tough."
* One thing that should never be overlooked by all the bluster is that Mayweather is one of the hardest working fighters in boxing and that sentiment was eloquently stated by narrator Barry Pepper, "talent by itself means nothing."
* Incredible timing for "All Access," being in Argentina the day Maidana's daughter was born. Those segments in which the fighter held and talked about his newborn child were the only times in which he smiled.
* Excellent transition from Maidana and his child to the out-of-focus neon stilletto on the Las Vegas strip.
* The line, "promoters, sponsors, members of the fourth estate, they're all his [Mayweather's] subjects," was a bit over the top.
* The entire opening segment was unfortunate. Mayweather flaunted his jewely, cash and exotic cars. All of which viewers have seen before.  The cameras followed Mayweather to a luxury car dealership at which he purchased a Ferrari and a Bentley. The narration then explained, "Rare is the odometer that exceeds 2,500 miles."

That scene was followed by Mayweather talking about a breakup with his fiancee, Shantel Jackson, who was a regular on these shows. However, in this episode, she was not even mentioned by name, only referred to as a "this former resident," while showing footage inside Mayweather's home.

That was immediately followed by the an excellent line written by Kriegel, "Floyd may be single, but he's never alone." Then we see Mayweather sitting with three women discussing private body parts. This came off as a thinly veiled dig at his former fiancee.  This isn't the first time that Mayweather has used "All Access" to push a personal agenda that had nothing to do with boxing.

On Saturday, May 3, Marcos “El Chino” Maidana will be fighting for more than the unified welterweight world championship and glory of defeating the pound-for-pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather. The hard-hitting Argentine powerhouse will be representing a country with a deep and storied tradition in the sweet science when he steps into the ring at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in a 12-round welterweight world unification bout live on SHOWTIME PPV®.

For a country known for its passion for soccer, Argentina boasts an impressive boxing history that includes 39 world champions. Today, high profile Argentine boxers are littered across the sport’s landscape including middleweight world champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez, former interim world champion Lucas “The Machine” Matthysse, who is coming off of an amazing win over John Molina last Saturday, former WBC welterweight World Champion Carlos “Tata” Baldomir, three-time light welterweight world champion Juan Martin “Latigo” Coggi and current WBA Interim Featherweight World Champion Jesus Cuellar.

“I know I not only carry the weight of my Argentine people into the ring with me, but also the pride and glory of Hispanics around the world,” said Maidana. ” It would mean everything to me to be able to do something that no one has done in this sport before. I know it will bring great pride to Argentina.”

Mayweather has faced other Argentine fighters during his storied career, defeating Gustavo Cuello in 1998, Carlos Rios in 1999 and Baldomir in 2006, all three by unanimous decision. The question now is whether Maidana is the person who will end this trend.

“Marcos has the power to hurt Mayweather. We saw that in the [Adrien] Broner fight,” said Matthysse. “If he connects with the right shot and has a chance to connect with more shots, he will be able to beat Mayweather.”

“I think Maidana could win this fight by way of knockout, that’s the only way to go against Mayweather,” Baldomir told ESPN in a recent interview. “Maidana has to break Mayweather’s defense and land one of his signature heavy punches.”

“As an Argentine, I must confess that a victory from Maidana will bring Argentina a huge pride, especially because he’s facing Floyd Mayweather, who is the best pound for pound fighter in the world,” said Coggi. “El Chino has a heavy punch, that’s key for his victory over Mayweather. ”

Despite the long line of champions, the history of Argentines facing No. 1-rated pound-for-pound champions is also strewn with disappointments. Four times an Argentine fighter has found himself in that position and has failed to break through. While these losses were to the household names of Jack Dempsey, Marvin Hagler, Pernell Whitaker and Muhammad Ali, Argentine fans are no doubt clamoring for one of their own to capture their own legendary moment.

Maidana is off to a good-start in making Argentine history, after his thrilling upset of Broner last December. He became the second boxer, after Martinez to be awarded with the “Marca Pais” or “Argentine Trademark.” This honor is given by the Argentine Ministry of Tourism as a way of expressing the pride and support that the Argentine nation has for those individuals.

Maidana will take this and his powerful fists into Las Vegas this week with the hopes of rewriting the history of Argentine boxing from one of just-misses to one of triumph and glory.

"THE MOMENT"

Who: Floyd Mayweather (45-0, 26 KOs), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA, vs. Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31 KOs), Margarita, Santa Fe, Argentina, 12 rounds, to unify Mayweather's World Boxing Council and Maidana's World Boxing Association welterweight titles (147 pounds).
When: Saturday
Where: MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas
TV: Showtime Pay-Per-View, 9 p.m. (main event approximately 11:30 p.m.)

Fast facts:
• Maidana is from Santa Fe, one of Argentina's 23 provinces — but not the first from that province to fight Mayweather in a championship bout. Carlos Rios, whose hometown is Santo Tome, lost a 12-round decision to Mayweather in 1999. Maidana's hometown is Margarita.

• There are 13 Americans recognized as world champions by the WBA, WBC, IBF or WBO, 11 of them undefeated. Two of the three best records on that list belong to Grand Rapids natives — Mayweather (45-0) and WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (31-0), sandwiched around Californian Mikey Garcia (34-0), the WBO lightweight champion.

• Because the fight is at the welterweight limit of 147 pounds, Mayweather goes back to his preferred eight-ounce gloves. In his three fights at 154 pounds, he wore 10-ounce gloves, per rules in Nevada (and most boxing jurisdictions) which set that as the cutoff line for an increase in glove weights.

• By the time Maidana, 30, made his professional debut in 2004, Mayweather, 37, had won 13 championship fights.

• In 10 fights since he won his first title at welterweight in 2006, against Zab Judah, and including that bout, Mayweather has fought all or part of 110 out of 120 scheduled rounds. Maidana has boxed 169 rounds his entire career.

The main event is a farcical matchup now, as Davis is absolutely nothing more than a club fighter, but the other two bouts are competitive on paper. That's the good news. The bad news is that this is a show anchored on the entertainment value of Ishe Smith, Mickey Bey, and Rico Ramos, and, well, that's not what I'd advertise when trying to convince viewers to buy a PPV the next night, but what do I know? Pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather is refusing to underestimate renowned knockout artist Marcos Maidana ahead of their megafight this weekend.

The pair clash at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday night, live and exclusive on BoxNation, with boxing’s number one superstar adamant that he will need to be at his very best to overcome the formidable Argentine.

Despite some calling into question Maidana’s chances, the WBC welterweight world champion believes the Santa Fe native’s victory over Adrien Broner to claim the WBA crown last December shows he’s not one to be overlooked.

“Adrien Broner’s a good boxer and he roughed Adrien Broner up and he got the victory, so we can’t say what this guy, can or he can’t do. We cannot overlook the guy,” said Mayweather.

“I can’t just say he’s going to be an easy fight because he’s not going to be an easy fight for me, I don’t think so. What I have to do is I’ve got to make sure that I’m at my best.

“I think when Maidana’s facing me his confidence is built after he beat Adrien Broner because he feels that both of the styles are very, very similar, so it’s like the same style.

“So May 3 I’ve got to go out there and take my time, keep my composure and be me. Everybody thinks he’s just going to be a pushover, but I don’t think so. That’s why I’m training hard and I’m pushing myself to the limit every day,” he said.

Despite his impressive victory over Broner, the 30-year-old Maidana has already suffered defeat at the hands of another man fighting on the bill, British star Amir Khan.

The former unified light-welterweight world champion takes on Luis Collazo on the same night, but Mayweather has refused to focus solely on attacking Maidana’s body, a focal point Khan and others have used to their benefit.

“My focus is this guy. I’m pretty sure he’s going to be well rounded and ready for this fight because this is at a total different level.

“Against Amir Khan, the guy could have been doing a lot of sit-ups and making his body in tip-top condition and tip-top shape. Amir Khan could have just caught him with a good shot,” said Mayweather.

“My body is in very good condition, but sometimes a guy can hit me with a good shot and I can feel it, but we just don’t know how we’re going to approach the fight.

“We’re going to take our time and go out there and if a guy leaves an opening on his face, we’re going to take it, if he leaves an opening on his body we’re going to take it, but we can’t just say we’re going to go in there and everything is going to go to the body. We’re going to take our time and pick the guy apart,” he said.

No matter how the fight pans out the elusive Mayweather, who has captured eight world titles in five weight divisions, is certain that this will be one of the most entertaining bouts this year as he looks to stand in front of the rugged Maidana.

“We must realize that I am the bigger guy even though I walk around at 150. I go no higher than 152. I’m naturally the bigger guy because I’ve been at 147 almost 10 years now, so I’m naturally the bigger guy. I think that my dad has the game plan to stay in the pocket, make the guy miss and make the guy pay,” he said.

It is the fact he is able to see the shots coming and adjust which will allow Mayweather to adopt this game plan despite the threat such a bold strategy like this presents against one of the best punchers around.

“I can see the shots,” said Mayweather. “Actually, I can feel when a guy’s going to punch. I can feel it. I don’t even have to see it; I can feel it. You know, this is just with experience and being around the sport so long. I can just feel a guy when he’s going to shoot his shot. A lot of times guys telegraph their shot. Their body language gives away when they’re going to shoot because of how they position themselves.

“So when a guy positions himself in a certain way you know what shot he’s going to throw, but my thing is whatever a guy’s best attribute is, whatever he does best, my goal is to take that away from him and make him resort to doing something else,” he said.

After months of anticipation, Floyd "Money" Mayweather will finally enter the ring to put his 45-0 record on the line against Marcos "El Chino" Maidana on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Though Mayweather comes in undefeated, Maidana is a successful fighter with a wealth of confidence and a 35-3 career record. With 31 KOs to his name, Maidana has the ability to change the outcome of a fight with just one punch.

But Mayweather has always lived up to the moment and risen to the challenge on the big stage. Whether it was Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton or Miguel Cotto, Money entered MGM Grand and came out on top numerous times throughout his career.

Before the match officially gets underway on Saturday, here's a look at the pay-per-view info and a full breakdown of the match.

Where: MGM Grand, Las Vegas
When: Saturday, May 3
Time: 9 p.m. ET
Watch: Showtime Pay-Per-View
Live Stream: Sho.com

Money is on a quest for 46-0, but El Chino has his own set of plans for Saturday night.

Rather than be a stepping stone to an already historic career, Maidana wants to be the fighter who stopped the Money train on the world's biggest stage. Maidana even went so far as to boast that he would win the fight for his fans, per his official account:

The challenge against Mayweather is clearly one that Maidana is ready to take head-on. And with his heavy hands and overpowering style, the Argentine might have a better shot than some would think.
Maidana spoke to the media about his style and mindset coming into the epic clash:

Despite his confidence, Maidana comes into the match against the top fighter in the world. With the bright lights on and the entire boxing world watching, how El Chino responds to critics and backs up his words could shape his entire career.

One fighter has been begging for a bout with Manny Pacquiao for years, while the other has worked his way up in hopes of a clash with the Filipino boxer.

Given the fact that Mayweather vs. Pacquiao looks like a watered-down version of what might have been years ago, the likelihood of the two matching up seems like wishful thinking. But with Maidana's rise in popularity and a potential win over Mayweather under his belt, a fight with Pac-Man could be on the horizon.

On the second episode of Showtime’s All Access: Mayweather vs. Maidana, Maidana's trainer Robert Garcia spoke about the potential for a bout with Pacquiao, saying, "After Mayweather, we want Pacquiao, too." Maidana chimed in, "Not even witchcraft will save him."

Even if El Chino doesn't succeed against Money, his skills in the ring might ward off the 35-year-old Pacquiao from agreeing to a fight. Much like Juan Manuel Marquez, Maidana's ability to change a fight with one swing makes it a difficult matchup for Pacquiao.

While it might be a difficult task, matching up Maidana against Pacquiao after facing Mayweather would give the boxer a chance to prove his worth against two of the sport's top names.

Mayweather vs. Maidana Showtime All Access: Highlights and Review of Episode 2, Mayweather vs. Maidana Undercard: Preview and Prediction for Khan vs. Collazo, Mayweather vs Maidana All Access: Full episode two.

It wasn’t Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Marcos Maidana.
In fact, it wasn’t even Robin Leach or Robert Garcia.

Instead, when it came to Saturday’s premiere of Showtime’s second All Access: Mayweather vs. Maidana episode—prior to its “Heavy Hitters” fight broadcast from Carson, California—the best line of the night came from, of all people, veteran family tree actor Marlon Wayans.

“What person that speaks Spanish are you going to beat up on this time?” Wayans said.
Though it doesn’t give Maidana—the reigning WBA welterweight champion—the credit he deserves for the status he’s earned, the query from the A Haunted House 2 star does illustrate the basic storyline of each of the docudrama’s three incarnations since Mayweather signed with Showtime 14 month ago.

And as it was for Mexican wannabes Robert Guerrero and Saul Alvarez preceding him, the tale being spun for Money’s rugged Argentine is one of a back-to-basics father wading into the pool owned by the flashy, opulent and unapologetically brash five-division and pound-for-pound kingpin.

“Why not have the finer things in life,” Mayweather said, as he toured former Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous host Robin Leach through a palatial Las Vegas residence complete with a pair of $1.6 million Bugatti automobiles. “A million a month for the rest of a person’s life, I don’t think that’s too bad.”

Meanwhile, when the narrative cut to Maidana, it found a fighter who was mouthing from a similar script—albeit with perhaps a tad less confidence than his ultimately beaten predecessors.

“If I win this fight, I will become No. 1,” he said, in a statement that was more noticeable for the conjunction at the start of the sentence than the nine words that followed.

“I’m already on the dance floor, so I have to dance.”

If self-assurance is truly an issue in April, it’s likely that disaster will be a result come May.

Fortunately for Maidana, the remainder of the episode was enhanced by the presence of trainer Robert Garcia, whose certainty of his man’s triumph was reminiscent of the multiple weeks he spent on HBO’s 24/7 show chirping that fellow charge Brandon Rios would vanquish Manny Pacquiao in China.

That one didn’t work so well for the Oxnard crew, but even Rios was around to pile on the wordy heap.
“What you did to [Adrien] Broner, you’re going to do the same thing to Mayweather,” the former 140-pound champion said, draped in a sweatshirt that stretched over a body that appeared poised for life as a middleweight. “I don’t pay to see fights, but I got a ticket for this one.”

As usual, Mayweather seems content to spend cash on more gaudy trinkets.

He and a noticeably bloated Leach spent some guy time talking jewelry, ties and sunglasses, too, and sat down for a bit to fondle a table full of diamond-encrusted dog tags estimated at $5 million.

“I’m like a kid in a candy store,” Mayweather said. “Fly, flashy and flamboyant. If you’ve got it, flaunt it. It’s all about having fun. I like to be spontaneous. Whatever I feel like doing, I do.

“But I’m still working hard like I don’t have a dime.”

Whether 30 more minutes will convince another million folks to pay $75 to watch on May 3, who knows?

Episode 2 of All Access: Mayweather vs. Maidana, a four-part series from Showtime Sports, aired Saturday, April 26, at 9 p.m. ET, preceding the live Showtime Championship Boxing triple-header headlined by Keith Thurman vs. Julio Diaz.
