"THE MOMENT"
Who:
Floyd Mayweather (45-0, 26 KOs), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA, vs.
Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31 KOs), Margarita, Santa Fe, Argentina, 12
rounds, to unify Mayweather's World Boxing Council and Maidana's World
Boxing Association welterweight titles (147 pounds).
When: Saturday
Where: MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas
TV: Showtime Pay-Per-View, 9 p.m. (main event approximately 11:30 p.m.)
Fast facts:
•
Maidana is from Santa Fe, one of Argentina's 23 provinces — but not the
first from that province to fight Mayweather in a championship bout.
Carlos Rios, whose hometown is Santo Tome, lost a 12-round decision to
Mayweather in 1999. Maidana's hometown is Margarita.
• There are
13 Americans recognized as world champions by the WBA, WBC, IBF or WBO,
11 of them undefeated. Two of the three best records on that list belong
to Grand Rapids natives — Mayweather (45-0) and WBO middleweight
champion Peter Quillin (31-0), sandwiched around Californian Mikey
Garcia (34-0), the WBO lightweight champion.
• Because the fight
is at the welterweight limit of 147 pounds, Mayweather goes back to his
preferred eight-ounce gloves. In his three fights at 154 pounds, he
wore 10-ounce gloves, per rules in Nevada (and most boxing
jurisdictions) which set that as the cutoff line for an increase in
glove weights.
• By the time Maidana, 30, made his professional debut in 2004, Mayweather, 37, had won 13 championship fights.
•
In 10 fights since he won his first title at welterweight in 2006,
against Zab Judah, and including that bout, Mayweather has fought all or
part of 110 out of 120 scheduled rounds. Maidana has boxed 169 rounds
his entire career.
